Reconnected by Grace

Part 2 of the “Created to Connect” Series
Ephesians 2:1–10

When Life Won’t Click Together

Have you ever stepped on a LEGO in the dark?

You don’t forget it.

But here’s something else about LEGO bricks—they’re not meant to exist by themselves.

A single piece might look fine sitting on a table… but it doesn’t fulfill its purpose until it connects.

That’s the idea behind this series: God didn’t create you to live disconnected. He created you to connect—to Him and to one another.

Last week, we saw that clearly in the words of Jesus:

“I am the vine; you are the branches…” (John 15:5, NIV)

Life only works when we stay connected to Him.

But that raises an honest question:

If we were created to connect… why do we feel so disconnected?

Why does it feel like we’re trying—but something just won’t come together?

When Trying Harder Doesn’t Work

If you’re honest, you’ve probably felt this.

You know the right things.
You’re doing the right things.
From the outside, everything looks fine.

But underneath?

Something feels… off.

Not broken.
Not collapsed.
Just not quite right.

Like trying to build something… and the pieces won’t click.

And what do we do in those moments?

We try harder.

We push.
We add more effort.
More discipline.
More activity.

We think, “If I can just get this right… then everything will finally come together.”

But what if that’s the wrong solution?

What if the problem isn’t that you need to try harder… but that something deeper is wrong?

The Truth We Don’t Naturally Admit

Ephesians 2 doesn’t just describe how we feel. It tells us what’s actually true.

And it’s not flattering.

“Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.” (Ephesians 2:1, NLT)

Not struggling.
Not confused.
Not disconnected.

Dead.

That changes everything.

Because dead people don’t fix themselves.

We tend to soften the language:

  • “I’m in a dry season.”
  • “I feel distant from God.”

But Paul doesn’t describe a feeling. He describes a condition.

Apart from Christ, we didn’t need improvement.
We needed resurrection.

The Two Most Hopeful Words in the Bible

Right after describing our condition, Paul writes:

“But God…” (Ephesians 2:4, NLT)

Those two words change everything.

We were dead.
We were stuck.
We couldn’t fix ourselves.

But God stepped in.

Why?

“He is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much…” (Ephesians 2:4, NLT)

God didn’t stand at a distance and say, “Try harder.”

He moved toward us.

The Builder Steps In

Think back to the LEGO picture.

Imagine a pile of bricks:

  • Dirty
  • Misaligned
  • Stuck together wrong
  • Not working

Now imagine a child trying to force them together.

But the problem isn’t effort.

The problem is the condition of the pieces.

Now imagine something changes.

A master builder steps in.

He picks up the pieces.
Cleans what’s dirty.
Fixes what’s broken.
Aligns what’s off.

And suddenly… things start clicking.

Not because the pieces fixed themselves—
but because the builder knew what to do.

That’s grace.

Grace is not God saying, “Try harder.”
Grace is God saying, “I’ll do what you can’t do.”

You Don’t Earn Grace—You Receive It

“God saved you by his grace… it is a gift from God.” (Ephesians 2:8, NLT)

A gift.

Not something you earn.
Not something you prove.
Not something you achieve.

Something you receive.

Saved for a Purpose

“For we are God’s masterpiece…” (Ephesians 2:10, NLT)

God isn’t just rescuing you.

He’s rebuilding you.

Shaping you.
Forming you.
Putting your life together with purpose.

Living in Grace

Here’s where many of us get stuck.

We believe we’re saved by grace… but then we drift back into living by effort.

So what does it actually look like to live in grace?

  • Stop trying to earn what God already gave you.
  • Learn to depend, not just try harder.
  • See your life differently—you are God’s workmanship.
  • Let your life reflect the Builder.

Grace doesn’t just forgive you—it changes you.

The Question You Can’t Avoid

So here it is.

Are you still trying to build your life on your own… or have you received the grace God offers?

Because trying harder isn’t working.

And it never will.

You can’t fix what only God can make alive.

The Good News

God didn’t wait for you to fix yourself.

He stepped in.

Jesus died for your sin.
He rose again.
And He offers you life—by grace.

You don’t need perfect words.

Just an honest heart.

“Jesus, I need You… Save me. Make me new.”

And He will.

Final Thought

You were not just disconnected.

You were dead.

But God made a way for you to live.

And that changes everything.
